Step 1 - Understand your business and reasons why customers choose you or your business over your competitors.
The first part of any successful referral marketing program starts with having a clear understanding of:
- Who you are,
- What is most important to you,
- Why you do the things you do,
- What are you trying to accomplish,
- Is the image you project congruent with the person or business that you want to be?
Step 2 - When you have a strong understanding of who you are and what you want to be, it makes it much easier to determine who YOU want to work with, and that’s PART 2, Your Target Market. When you are clear about who you are, your most desired customers not only become more apparent, they become attracted to you. In PART 2 we discuss:
- Who your clients are.
- What they look like.
- And began to realize where we might find them.
Step 3 - “When you know who you are, and who your target market is, recognizing the people who make up the most important relationships for you becomes easy. PART 3 is about YOUR PEOPLE. In this section we look at:
- What are key relationships can help you create the most effective referral marketing program for you?
- And we will take you entire contact database and stratify it to create your Relationship VIP list.
Step 4 - When you've figured out who you are, the target market where your message resonates, the most important relationships that will help you reach that target market, we can begin to examine what activities will help develop those relationships to a much higher level.
PART 4 of the program, Your Activities, is about:

Step 5 - Each of those groups requires certain information in order to do their job. PART 5 of the program is Equipping Your People. In this section we will look at:
The different groups of people that can refer business to us and provide them with the materials, conversations, processes, and other things they need to effectively refer us to their relationships.“ As we monitor the success of that process, we also need to be doing some activates tos upport our referral marketing efforts. Those things are:
- Our rewards system
- Social media actions
- Speaking engagements
Step 6 - Those things make up PART 6 of the program Your Supporting Activities. In this section we will learn:
- The crucial elements to an effective reward system for our referral sources that will keep them excited about referring us business
- Some things we need to be doing on social media that support our referral marketing efforts. How to use a social media strategy to further encourage referral relationships, develop new ones, and even promote ourselves a little.
- Finally, we will learn how to set ourselves apart from our competition: Developing an effective speaking presentation. "Often times we are asked to present either ourselves, or our products, and it is critical that we do this in a fashion that is motivating to our target market."
Step 7 – Your customized Referral Marketing Plan We put it all together so you walk out with a complete actionable plan.
